Future Outlook. HPC and Quantum Computing
High Performance Computing (HPC) provides powerful solvers for real-world
calculations. In addition to the rapid evolution of its conventional hardware and software
technologies, HPC is also evolving into powerful, hybrid architectures, integrating
complementary quantum technologies. Quantum computers are thus becoming
accelerators for supercomputers, whereby they can provide exponentially more powerful
solutions for certain hard compute problems of great economical interest. Quantum
computers also provide significant support to minimize the rapidly accelerating demand
of data centre energy consumption, at orders of magnitude lower than current HPC and
AI data centres. Quantum computing provides access to a new compute paradigm that
will drive HPC into new solution territories, both more powerful and less power hungry.
