IoT has great advantages and one of them is energy efficiency. It helps us to consume less and therefore, it becomes a threat to climate change. Thanks to digital transformation, carbon dioxide emissions are estimated to drop 20% in the next decade.
Companies are becoming increasingly aware of the need for this change. In a world concerned with environment, they try to be more sustainable, optimizing their resources and generating less waste. By applying IoT, they reduce costs and increase productivity. This makes the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations closer and closer.
Smart buildings, Smart Cities and efficient mobility
Some practical examples of digital transformation and sustainability are smart buildings, Smart Cities and efficient mobility. Together, they are a serious knock to climate crisis. In intelligent buildings, thanks to remote management, 22% of energy is saved and, thereby, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced.
As for Smart Cities, by placing sensors on the streets, we reduce traffic and pollution and, consequently, we make them quieter. This point is especially important, because, according to the Ministry for Ecological Transition, transport represents 25% of total gas emissions in Spain. Therefore, it is important to optimize the routes of logistics companies and better plan public transport. If we apply IoT properly, in ten years, 750,000 million liters of gasoline will be saved worldwide.
Internet of Environment to stop species extinction
IoT, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence contribute to preserving biodiversity and natural resources, such as water. Now that species become extinct without control, it is essential to have data on the fauna and flora that remains on the planet. In fact, some studies are already being done with elephants and leopards to know their status by using drones.
The problem of the climate crisis affects everyone and, therefore, we must all contribute to stop. Being that crucial, the IOTSWC19 addressed this issue from different perspectives and especially from what technologies can offer to overcome this vital struggle.
